NaNoWriMo

Here we are again at the end of October. (Where in the world has this year gone anyway?) The beginning of November means once again people from all over the world will commence with National Novel Writing Month, better known as NaNoWriMo.

The goal is to complete a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. I have successfully participated in this endeavor three times. I love to write. I should do it more often. But after successfully completing my 50,000 words last year I wasn’t really excited about how it had gone. I made the decision that that would be my last year of NaNo-ing.

But now here we are again. November 1st is almost here. I’ve started seeing comments from other bloggers of their intention to participate this year. And, I hate to admit it, I’m thinking of jumping into the fray once more.

This year’s writing can’t possibly be worse than last year, right? The possibility is there that it could be much better! I’m still on the fence. I don’t have a solid idea for this novel yet in my mind. But there have been glimmers. Half formed thoughts. Scenery I want to try to describe.

I think I will hang out over at the NaNoWriMo forums for a little bit and see if something doesn’t jump out and grab me. I’ll keep you updated.

Dear Politicians,

Please immediately cease and desist with the smear campaign commercials. I cannot possibly tolerate them for another week and a half until the elections.

A much better route would be to tell us what you plan to actually DO, not how evil the other guy is. Guess what? You’re all politicians. We know we likely have to try to choose the lesser of two evils. By telling us what your goals are we may be able to do that effectively.

Thank you.

‘Tis the season…

Duran Duran in 1981. Clockwise from top left: ...

for signs and portents.

Yesterday morning I started the day waking up to Duran Duran on the alarm clock radio. I ended the day talking to Amy and planning a trip to see her in just a few weeks!

What do those two things have to do with each other, you might ask. Well, I’ll tell you. Duran Duran was the catalyst that brought two young idealistic Amy’s together back in the early ’80s.

She wasn’t so sure at first about the girl who moved in and took her sole Amy status from her. Then she saw my Duran Duran magazines and forgave me everything else.

The only thing we disagreed on? I was all about Simon. She liked John. She always did go for the bass players!

To top it all off… we might be going to see Five Finger Death Punch while we are there!

WHEE!!!

A Sunday evening conversation

The Fencing lesson

Image via Wikipedia

Mj: (something I didn’t quite catch from the other side of the room while reading my book.)

Princess Girl: Touche!

Mj: We should take Fencing lessons.

Princess Girl: I’d poke my eye out.

Mj: They have those visor thingies.

Princess Girl: Oh, yeah! But they probably don’t have them around here.

Me: Probably at Blackhawk, or even the Y.

Princess Girl: Blackhawk!

Mj: I wonder if you get college credit for that?

Princess Girl: We totally should do it.

So, don’t be surprised if my blog starts detailing fencing lessons. I love these girls!

Excuse me…

One of several versions of the painting "...

while I have a minor panic attack today.

In just over 2 months Princess Girl will be eligible to receive her driver’s license.

YIKES!

My baby is going to be sixteen years old. How in the hell did that happen? Truly. Sixteen? I feel the sands of time running through my fingers and I can’t seem to catch them.

And the next person who tells me that in just three short years she will fly the coop and be off to college on her own…

I’m gonna shoot you. With a gun.

Stop saying that! It’s not that I don’t know that it is true. It is simply that I am not prepared to think about that phase in our lives quite yet.

Let me ease into it. Maybe next year we can talk about it. Let me get through 16 first!
