Best Homecoming ever!

Or at least that is the consensus I have heard from Princess Girl and her friends (via Re-tweets).

The weather for the parade was fabulous.

The half time dance by Princess Girl and the other cheer leaders was very good.

Decorating for the dance and hair prep went off without a hitch. There was even time for a nap (although everyone and their brother decided to call, message or talk to me in MY nap window).

Pictures were very nice. Thank you very much to Princess Girl’s friend and her parents who invited such a large group into their home for snacks, pictures and champagne punch (for the grown-ups only of course)!

Princess Girl said dinner was good. And her vegetarian date even found something to eat (after it was re-made sans bacon).

And the dance? The best ever! Very cute picture backdrop. No complaints about music choices. No major dress malfunctions. With the exception of the accidental elbow to the eye Princess Girl smiled the entire evening.

We were truly blessed with a fabulous weekend for this, our final, Homecoming dance.

This is not an apology, but advanced warning…

Princess Girl’s first day of her senior year of high school starts bright and early tomorrow morning.

That should be an ‘enough said’. But in case it is not… The next nine months are going to be an emotional roller coaster. All of the milestones and activities will remind me of how proud I am of her. They will also remind me of how soon she will be going off to college and starting the next phase of her life not so close to mom.

We have already done the photo shoot for her senior pictures. Gorgeous! I am thinking a second mortgage is going to be in order for all of the prints we will want. It is going to be nearly impossible to narrow down our choices.

[Sidebar: Princess Girl’s senior pictures are amazing. I will post some here as soon as I get the release. For those of you on Facebook, you can see some of them there. Or you can go to DashaDenger.com , Princess Girl holds the first three spots in Clients -> Portraits I.

If you are looking for a photographer for senior pictures I highly recommend Dasha. It was a fun, laid-back shoot. If you book with her, give her my name as a referral and we will get credit towards prints!]

The next thing we need to focus on is college applications. And school work. And cheerleading. And homecoming. And…

Busy. Exciting. Sad.

Here it all comes. We’d better get ready!

Parenting woes

I am super busy today with work and Dr. appointments and parenting.

This is just a quick note to let you know we will be attending the school board meeting tonight as they are talking about cutting any or all of the following classes: French, Band, Choir, Consumer Ed, Foods, child rearing.

Based on the outcome of the meeting tonight we may be looking for another school for Princess Girl to attend next year. She has already missed out on two classes in the first two years of high school because there were not enough sections offered.

Ugh.

Letter to a teacher.

Ms. H,

Princess Girl has tendonitis in her ankle that is causing severe inflammation and pain. I have the medical documentation from her doctor if you would like to see it. Your comments, yesterday, to her and the other choir students that she was faking it for attention were not only unnecessary and unprofessional, but embarrassing to Princess Girl as well.

Princess Girl has always loved your class and enjoyed having you as a teacher. Your comments made her apprehensive to go to your class that afternoon. This is not a good way to build self esteem and foster good grades in a teenage girl. I feel you owe her an apology.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

aseeofgreen

Ugh. There is so much drama in high school cheerleading. Four girls share the blame if a stunt fails, but only THREE can catch. If you don’t try to catch her TWICE in two days how can you expect her to trust you a third time?

Ugh. Teenagers have the worst tone of voice even when they thing they are being nice.

This too shall pass.

Princess Girl is on Student Council for the second year in a row. Homecoming is fast approaching and she is gearing up for it. She is the Coronation chair and co-chair for the Junior Varsity float building committee. You aren’t surprised by this, are you?

She had scheduled a float building committee meeting at our house for Sunday afternoon at 3pm. She had 8-10 R.S.V.P when she sent out the invitation. Someone asked how long the meeting would be. I told her they would probably get everything accomplished that they were going to discuss within an hour. At 3pm one girl showed up. About 5 minutes later one boy showed up. The three of them got started discussing the float. Between 3:20 and 3:30 two other kids and the Student Council sponsor arrived.

The original three showed the other three their plans and they worked on a few changes, additions and a supply list. They wrapped things up about 4:10.

Gee, an hour from when they got started look at that.

The teacher and the one girl that has her driver’s lisence left right away. The others each texted a parent to let them know they were done. The second girl left about 4:30. At 4:45 I offered to give the two remaining boys a ride home.

Oh, no. Their parents were on their way.

About 5:00 one boy left. I again offered to give the last boy a ride home. No, he talked to his mom she is on her way.

At 5:35 Princess Girl texted me from the other room to say the mom was supposed to be there in 10 minutes.

At this point both Princess Girl and I are getting very frustrated. We both have chores to do. She has homework still to work on. And I need to run to the store. He’s a nice, good kid, but I really didn’t intend for him to be at the house for 3+ hours.

Ugh.

Finally, at just after 6:00 his mother showed up. And then Princess Girl and I raced through the rest of our evening trying to get everything done. I still don’t understand what the issue was. He only lives about a mile up the road…

By the way, none of the sophomore class officers and not a single freshman showed up to the meeting. Guess they’ll just have to like what the people that actually showed up decided on.

Back in session

Well, Princess Girl started her sophomore year of high school yesterday by purposefully breaking the dress code. It was only a two hour day. And technically they had not received the handbooks outlining the dress code until yesterday at school.

But she knew. And did it anyway. And I let her.

The sundress she wore was adorable. Knee length, white linen, SPAGHETTI STRAPS. Yep, you guessed it. That was the violation. But it was only two hours of school and it was the first day. You always have to be as cute as possible on the first day back.  A couple teachers mentioned the problem to her. She acknowledged and went on about her business.

Today, the sundress she is wearing is fully within dress code. Two whole fingers on those sleeves. And she looks fabulous.

The place to be.

I know I have mentioned before that I live in a very small town. We have a gas station and a dollar store. And five bars . But no where local to get groceries. Fortunately, there are several grocery/shopping options not too far from home.

It takes about 11 minutes to get to the new Walmart. And Jewel/Osco is just across the street if you want to spend three times as much on the same items. Hy-vee is a few minutes farther down the road if you prefer to split the difference.

Me, I’m a Walmart girl.

My usual weekly grocery shopping has occurred on Sunday afternoons (after cheer practice) for the last couple of years. But Princess Girl does not have cheer on Sunday afternoons any more. And with other schedule changes this weekend I found myself making my weekly shopping trip on Sunday morning. Little did I know, this  is when EVERYONE from my small town does their Walmart shopping.

As soon as I walked in the door I saw Lori – J’s mom. She was a ways down the aisle and did not see me. Shortly after that I saw Mrs. M – the grandmother of one of Princess Girl’s friends (and I went to school with the girl’s parents). We smiled at each other in passing. Next was Scott – a high school classmate of mine – and his two adorable little ones. The curls on that little girl, holy cow! We gave a quick ‘hey how’s it going’ as we passed by. A little further on in my shopping adventure I saw Mr. B. I didn’t expect him to say anything; he never did while teaching us math in junior high. (Seriously, how do you teach math if you don’t speak?) Then there was Megan (with her mom and brother) – classmate and friend of Princess Girl. Again we smiled and did the quick greeting as we went in different directions through the store. And finally I saw Emily – Princess Girl’s first cheer ‘big sister’ and friend. As always she had a big smile and a friendly greeting.

You may be thinking, that is only six people. Not that many in the scheme of ‘it’s a small world after all’. And you’d probably be right except I was only in the store for 10 minutes. Seriously. Our list this week was very short. I only picked up shampoo, pop and lime away. Three items. That is two people for every item in my cart.

Walmart. Sunday mornings. The place to be.

Princess Girl’s school held cheerleading tryouts yesterday for the fall football season. Of course I had every confidence in her. She was on the squad this year, and also on her competitive team. The girl can cheer.

I picked her up after tryouts and she said it went good, really good. About an hour later she received a phone call from the coach congratulating her on making the team, and asking if she would be interested in moving up to the VARSITY squad! Of course she said yes. She is so excited. I am incredibly proud of her.

Only six girls who will be true varsity in the fall tried out. The coach brought up Princess Girl and another girl to fill the squad to a solid eight. It will help them with stunting. It makes sense. And, that allowed her to not have to cut anyone from the JV squad where ten had tried out and only eight would have made it. It’s a win win situation all the way around.

And now for the snarky side…

A short while later another member of the varsity squad, a girl who will be a junior next year, posted on Facebook “this is BS, six would have been enough”. Obviously the coach didn’t think so. And I outlined above why six would not have been enough. Then that girl’s step-sister, a woman who I went to school with, replied that “it is all about politics and who you are not what you can do”.

EXCUSE ME????

Um, Princess Girl is the only one on the entire school squad that can tumble. She can do back flips and back tucks. She is working on a full twisting layout. She is a competitive cheerleader on an All-Star squad. She knows how to, and has experience with,  flying, basing and back-spotting in stunting.

It is about what she can do.

By the way, the girl who is complaining? She cannot do any of the things listed above that Princess Girl can do. And she was moved up to varsity for basketball season this year.

Yeah, no class.
